Martin Schaeffer’s story on the cabaret business (VARIETY, Feb. 18) paints a bleak (if realistic) picture of putting on a cabaret show. But it should be noted that New York is the main place that cabaret still exists on any kind of scale and it does need support from the industry as well as the public if it’s to keep afloat.
The entire month of March has been designated “Cabaret Month” by the Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC), which I represent. During the month, dozens of acts will be performing at 25 MAC-member clubs, culminating in the 5th Annual MAC Awards at Symphony Space on April 1. There is definitely life left in the old art form yet – despite some of its drawbacks.
