‘Sarafina!’ Won’t Be Seen In Los Angeles

The Los Angeles run of “Sarafina!” has been canceled, but the tour will continue with scheduled dates in other cities.

The mostly-South African cast members, many of whom were in the original Johannesburg and New York productions, were slated to complete a run in Durham, N.C., Jan. 26.

Since the tour doesn’t pick up again until Feb. 26 in Dayton, Ohio, the 48-member company will be laid off for four weeks. Tour spokeswoman Jackie Schrock said several company members will still be traveling to Los Angeles for a vacation.

The show had been booked into the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles and was due to open there Jan. 30. But producers canceled the run after the advance ticket sales fell off sharply.

A spokeswoman for New York-based Roadworks, which is coordinating the tour, said this is the first cancellation for the “Sarafina!” tour. Tour operators, she said, had canceled other performance stops in order to accommodate the L.A. run.

Tour, booked through the end of April, includes Chicago, St. Paul and Grand Rapids.

Meanwhile, both the local producers and tour operators have said there’s a possibility “Sarafina!” will eventually make its way to Los Angeles in late spring.
