New L.A. Troupe Launches With Rabe’s ‘Tomtom’

The first production for the new L.A. production company the Mojave Group will be the west coast premiere of David Rabe’s “Goose & Tomtom.”

Mojave Group was formed by San Francisco producer Steven Ullman and New York director Charles Otte. The play opens Jan. 21 at the Stella Adler Theater in Hollywood and will be directed by Otte.

Rabe walked away from the first production of the play, which he was directing for the New York Shakespeare Festival. A somewhat different version had a four-performance run at Lincoln Center with Sean Penn, Madonna and Harvey Keitel.

Rabe had wanted to direct “Tomtom” in Los Angeles with the New York cast, but when that didn’t come together, he gave the rights to the Mojave Group.

Otte and Ullman want to produce four plays a year in Los Angeles. Their next project is a new work titled “Mojave,” written by another Mojave Group member, Bradley Rand Smith (the fourth member of the group is writer Allen Plone).
