Biz Up; ‘Cats’ Nabs 1 Mil, ‘Chorus Line’ 781g

A big-grossing, arena-hopping “Cats” helped boost total road receipts by 6.5% during Week 47 (April 22 to 28), even though the 22-production roster was down by one from the previous week.

Receipts for road productions totaled $9,171,144. “Cats,” playing a split week at two Michigan arenas, accounted for a huge $1,016,278.

The roster was split between climbers and fallers. Eleven productions reported boxoffice improvements over the previous week, while eleven went down. Had “Cats” not stolen its thunder, “A Chorus Line” would have won the week’s Most Improved Player award with a $781,773 net at Detroit’s cavernous Fox Theater.

No surprises from the usual team of heavyweights, as productions of “Les Miserables” and “The Phantom Of The Opera” kept their own strong stride. “Grand Hotel” had a good week in Chicago, and “The Heidi Chronicles” finished its Washington, D.C., run with decent numbers.

“Peter Pan” fell in Charlotte, as did “M. Butterfly” in Cleveland. “Lend Me A Tenor” did likewise in Ft. Lauderdale, and “Greater Tuna” had a weak week in Waco.

Reading the Road Grosses

Abbreviations and explanations for tour shows are the same as for Broadway with the following additions: (TR) tryout, (BT) bus and truck shows, (Lp) local productions. Dates indicate when the engagements begin and end, but (OE) means open-end bookings. As with Broadway boxoffice reports, the quoted receipts figures for touring and local non-New York productions represent the net amount, that is, after deduction of subscription discounts and theater party, credit card, computer and other sales commissions.
