Science, Tech Winners Named

Sixteen scientific or technical awards were announced last week for the 63rd annual Academy Awards by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. An Academy Award of Merit went to the Eastman Kodak Co. for the development of T-Grain technology and the introduction of EXR color negative films, there exhibiting “significant and simultaneous improvement in speed, grain and sharpness,” per the Academy.

Voted by the Academy’s board of governors, based on the recommendations of the scientific or technical awards committee chaired by John A. Bonner, the honors will be bestowed at a ceremony March 2.

Scientific or technical awards are given for “devices, methods, formulas, discoveries or inventions of special and outstanding value to the arts and sciences of motion pictures which also have a proven history of use in the motion picture industry.”
