Fox has another hit in “Sleeping With The Enemy,” which bowed for a hot $l, 666,411. Steve Martin’s “L.A. Story” from Tri- Star opened with about half as much. And “Home Alone,” Fox’ godsend, remained near the top with about $500,000 in its 13th round.

After “L.A. Story,” the second most popular newcomer was “The Never Ending Story II” from Warner Bros, at $409,206. Not far behind were “Awakenings” and “Once Around,” both holding up pretty well. “The Grifters” is starting to tumble, however.

“Dances With Wolves” is as steady as ever and should cash in on its Oscar nominations. “Hamlet” and “Green Card” lost a little ground, while “Alice” fell by 35%. Further down the chart, last week’s openers were all boxoffice disasters: “Run,” “Popcorn,” “Queens Logic,” “Book Of Love” and “Meet The Applegates” all plummeted.

At the Carnegie and Angelika, Cinecom’s “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern” had a decent start of $33,819. The week’s other new exclusive was Prestige’s first release, “Ay, Carmela!” It started with a pleasant $21,070 at Lincoln Plaza. In its second stint, the uncut version of Bertolucci’s “1900” earned a healthy $14,509 at Film Forum.
