Paramount Home Video will release “Ghost” March 21 with a wholesale price that equates to $100 retail, according to published reports.
Details of what’s expected to be an aggressive marketing campaign are scheduled to be announced Jan. 31.
Paramount’s plans for the boxoffice smash have been the subject of speculation for months. Sources said the company had at one point settled on a low-priced, sell-through release, but in recent weeks changed to a high-priced strategy.
Though the $100 price suggests “Ghost” is targeted to the rental market, Paramount is expected to support dealer efforts to sell off used rental copies in the weeks following the release.
In nearly four years, only one other major release has been priced at the equivalent of $100, Par’s “The Hunt For Red October” (most top titles are priced at $90 to $93).
