Palestinian Series Nixed

The on-again, off-again showcase here of film and videos by and about Palestinians is off again. Series organizers Elia Suleiman and Dan Walworth withdrew the show following a week of controversy that began with the resignation of Institute of Contemporary Art board v.p. Steven Grossman and culminated in the cancellation of the show.

Originally seen at the Artists Space in New York last year, the showcase entitled “Uprising: Film and Video on the Palestinian Resistance” had been scheduled and rescheduled several times to appear at the ICA. It was to be shown earlier this year, but was postponed with the outbreak of the gulf war.

Grossman’s resignation was over what he called the one-sided nature of the show, which presents the political viewpoint of the Palestinians supporting the “intafadeh” but provides no opposing views. The series was to run May 2 to 5 at the ICA, and “Canticle Of Stones,” which was programed independently, was still to be shown.
