Orion Pictures laid off a number of support and accounting staffers Feb.1 in an effort to cut its overhead, a studio spokesman confirmed. The company put the number of layoffs at fewer than 20, though outside sources said that as many as 50 to 60 people were let go.

Orion said the layoffs were limited to accounting staff and operators of its computer systems and that the reductions would have no impact on overall operations. Sources said a number of support staffers and assistants also were affected.

Orion recently posted nine-month results showing a loss of $14.9 million, or 78¢s; a share, and a $15.61 million loss for the quarter, compared with profits of $1.76 million the year before.
