MGM, Pioneer Push Sampler

MGM/UA Home Video and Pioneer LDCA will jointly release a sampler laserdisk to promote laserdisk hardware and MGM/Pathe laser software.

The project was initiated last fall by MGM/UA Home Video’s previous management. MGM/UA is said to have paid the production costs, estimated at $150,000. Pioneer, which has six-month exclusive rights for use of the sampler laserdisk, will pick up the tab for manufacturing and distributing.

In addition to offering segments spotlighting 63 MGM/UA films, the program explains letter-boxing, multichannel audio and how to use a laserdisk player.

Intended for point-of-sale use, the disk will be available through a number of distributors, including Image Entertainment, when Pioneer’s exclusivity expires.
