Three new releases failed to rouse the slumbering New York boxoffice. Universal’s “A Kiss Before Dying” took over the lead with about $700,000, easily beating the national champ, Buena Vista’s “Oscar.”

Third place went to Tri-Star’s new “Toy Soldiers, ” which edged out “Out For Justice,” with about $540,000. “Mortal Thoughts” plummeted in its second week, as did “Defending Your Life” and “The Silence Of The Lambs.”

The only film that improved was Avenue’s “The Object Of Beauty,” which expanded to 45 hotels with about $165,000. Old titles like “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “Dances With Wolves” and “Sleeping With The Enemy” all weakened considerably.

Paramount’s “Spartacus” revival had a superb first week with about $52,000 at the Ziegfeld. Prestige’s “Drowning By Numbers” nabbed about $33,000 at the Angelika and Festival. Castle Hill’s “John Cassavetes Collection” managed $12,000 at the Cinema 3rd Avenue, and Miramax’s “Journey Of Hope” saw about $10,000 at the 57th Street Playhouse.
