‘Godfather III’ Drops, Taking Mere $1.4 Mil

Although there was a predictable post-holiday letdown at the box office, “The Godfather, Part III” still reigned with about $1.4 million. It was followed by the indefatigable “Home Alone,” which registered nearly $1 million, and “Kindergarten Cop” with $862,550.

Like the leaders, “Edward Scissorhands” dropped by about 40%. “Dances With Wolves” and “Misery” both made nearly $500,000 and suffered modest declines. But “Look Who’s Talking Too” took a heavy loss in its fourth screening, with $424,946.

“The Russia House” and “Mermaids” began to slide after New Year’s, while “The Bonfire Of The Vanities” tumbled by nearly 50%. Both “Three Men And A Little Lady” and “Awakenings” made about $170,000 – but the former needed 42 screens and the latter only three.

“The Sheltering Sky” expanded fairly well, taking in $130,506. “The Rookie” is bombing, and “Come See The Paradise” hasn’t improved at three camps. Broadening to five houses, “Vincent & Theo” didn’t find many buyers with $28,086.

Woody Allen’s “Alice” remained the top exclusive, hoarding $115,576 at the Fine Arts in its third round. On two screens, “Hamlet” looked dashing with $98,309. “Green Card” should expand well, making $90,081 in its third romance at Cinema 1. And “The Field” remains quite stable at Murray Hill with $28,236.
