Buena Vista’s “Billy Bathgate” opened in the top spot with a high-shooting $770,441, beating the national champ “The People Under the Stairs” from Universal. Meanwhile, “Other People’s Money” held up better than last week’s leader, “House Party 2.”

Surprisingly, John Hughes’ “Curly Sue” actually improved to $466,743 in its second scam. The 4-week-old “Frankie and Johnny” also held up well. And Interstar Releasing’s “Highlander 2: The Quickening” got off to a pretty fast start with $461,330, topping the consistent “Little Man Tate.”

Other newcomers were not so fortunate. Fox’s “29th Street” had a wobbly opening of $234,195, and Triumph’s “Year of the Gun” barely got out of the starting gate with $109,510. “Iron Maze” from Castle Hill had the week’s most embarrassing debut with just $20,748 at 24 screens.

The classiest new exclusive was Goldwyn’s “Black Robe,” which found plenty of converts for $25,735 in its first full week at the Beekman. Miramax’s “Exposure” also had a healthy start of $16,484 at the Angelika. Last week’s delectable “Antonia & Jane” is gradually catching on with $20,541 at Cinema 2 and the Village East.

The Times Square area lost a first-run house as the twoscreen West Side Cinema adopted a porn policy, showing X-rated videos. The venue had booked porn films in the early 1980s when it was known as the Fantasy Theater.
