For the second week, “Awakenings” was New York’s favorite film, with $872,226. It was challenged by the national champion, “Home Alone,” which improved 20% in its 10th round. “Kindergarten Cop” also increased its earnings, to $593,012. But the biggest leap, a whopping 30%, was made by “Green Card.”

On the other side of the scales, “The Godfather, Part III” continued to decline in its fifth sesh. And “Lionheart” couldn’t sustain its strong start. “Hamlet” broadened its appeal to $446,917 at 40 castles, with a high per screen average.

The week’s new entries couldn’t compete with the Christmas releases. Paramount’s “Flight Of The Intruder” opened for $369,472, with Orion’s “Eve Of Destruction” hot on its trail. Lower on the list, “White Fang” from Buena Vista coughed up just $225,573. On three screens, “Once Around” from Universal had a promising introduction of $106,648.

Moviegoers were willing to leave their tv sets last week, with both “Dances With Wolves” and “Edward Scissorhands” holding steady. Nonetheless, “Not Without My Daughter” has not capitalized on interest in the Middle East.

New exclusives include “The 3rd Animation Celebration” from Expanded Entertainment, which debuted with a bright $24,420 at the Angelika. “Taxi Blues” via MK2 did well at Lincoln Plaza with $21,077, while Columbia’s “Men Of Respect” was somewhat less popular at the Carnegie with $18,887. They all paled in comparison to “Alice,” which improved to $103,579 in its fifth stint at the Fine Arts.
