While most of the Christmas releases declined substantially last week, “Awakenings” expanded with terrific results to earn $930,294 at 75 wards. It out-classed Universal’s “Lionheart,” which opened with a strong, but unremarkable $709,117. “The Godfather, Part III” was close behind, though it fell by 50%.

“Home Alone” declined somewhat, as did “Kindergarten Cop.” Buena Vista’s “Green Card” managed to broaden its appeal on more screens with $422,574. Another newcomer, “Not Without My Daughter” from MGM/UA, started out with a respectable $374,826.

“Dances With Wolves” slipped in its 10th ride, and “Edward Scissorhands” dipped in its sixth try. “Misery” and “Look Who’s Talking Too” are losing steam, as are “Mermaids” and “The Russia House.” By far the most dramatic loss was suffered by “The Bonfire Of The Vanities,” tumbling to $86,791.

At the bottom of the heap was Motion Picture Corp. of America’s “Hangfire,” which could hardly compete with tv coverage of an actual war. It took in about $3,000. “Alice” was less magical, but still grossed $96,136 at the Fine Arts. And “Hamlet” did almost as well at the 8th St. Playhouse and 68th St. Playhouse for a total of $92,405.
