In an effort to diversify, Polygram Music Video has changed its name and announced plans to expand into kidvid, sports and comedy.
Under the new Polygram Video USA moniker, the company will produce at least five projects in those categories for homevideo release this year. Production budgets were not disclosed. Slated for May release is the PV comedy production, “Jackie Martling Live At Rascals.”
Other productions may include music-driven sports documentaries on a label to be called Rad Sports. Exercise tapes are also planned featuring popular musicians.
Meanwhile, the company is actively acquiring kids, sports and comedy programs. Two such programs planned for release are a British-made comedy tape starring Billy Connolly (of tv’s “Head Of The Class”) and an Arnold Schwarzenegger docu called “Total Re-Build.”
Future acquisitions may include vintage American tv comedy shows, according to Joe Shults, PV prexy.
Shults said feature films for the vid rental market are not in the company’s immediate plans, but they are a possibility down the road.
For now, Polygram Video will continue to focus on the sell-through market, though some of the comedy programs also will be targeted at rental stores.
