Homevideo supplier Magnum Entertainment will change its focus from acquired B movies to in-house produced R-rated erotica. The strategy is designed to open worldwide tv markets and reduce Magnum’s reliance on domestic video revenues.

Six to eight productions are planned for this year, each budgeted at about $500,000 and tailored for an R rating. Magnum topper Walter Gernert will finance the films himself through a production unit called Axis Films. He said he expects some cash flow after four films are completed.

With Blockbuster and other domestic vidstores shying away from hardcore, Gernert believes stores increasingly will stock R-rated or unrated softcore programming.

Currently in production is “Carnal Crimes.” Domestic homevid release is planned for mid-summer in R-rated and unrated versions.
