A dark and gleeful revenge saga set in a world of unfaithful husbands and unfair standards of beauty, She-Devil [from Fay Weldon's novel The Life and Loves of a She Devil] offers a unique heroine in Ruth Patchett (Roseanne Barr), a dumpy but dedicated housewife afflicted with a conspicuous facial mole and an uninterested husband (Ed Begley Jr).

A dark and gleeful revenge saga set in a world of unfaithful husbands and unfair standards of beauty, She-Devil [from Fay Weldon’s novel The Life and Loves of a She Devil] offers a unique heroine in Ruth Patchett (Roseanne Barr), a dumpy but dedicated housewife afflicted with a conspicuous facial mole and an uninterested husband (Ed Begley Jr).

When Begley, an accountant, strays into the arms of a fabulously wealthy and affected romance novelist (Meryl Streep), Barr puts up with it – to a point.

However, when Begley, bags more or less packed, sets her blood boiling with crude put-downs, Barr clicks into an inspired attack mode, first by blowing up the house, then by dumping off the children at his love nest on her way to Whereabouts Unknown, then by ingeniously dismantling his career.

The casting is a real coup, with Barr going her everywoman TV persona one better by breaking the big screen heroine mold, and Streep blowing away any notion that she can’t be funny.
