Burt Reynolds plays Joe Paris, a suspended detective who wakes up from a drunken binge to find himself the lead suspect in a murder investigation. His case is given to an assertive debutante (Theresa Russell) working in the public defender's office, whose obsession with the case begins to wreack havoc on her relationship with her yuppie, hot-tubbing fiance stockbroker (Ted McGinley).

Burt Reynolds plays Joe Paris, a suspended detective who wakes up from a drunken binge to find himself the lead suspect in a murder investigation. His case is given to an assertive debutante (Theresa Russell) working in the public defender’s office, whose obsession with the case begins to wreack havoc on her relationship with her yuppie, hot-tubbing fiance stockbroker (Ted McGinley).

Beyond that it’s really anybody’s guess as to what’s going on, since the film [story by Steve Ransohoff] is so choppily assembled none of the various clues and innumerable suspects ever seem to lead anywhere.

Another major shortcoming is the woeful miscasting of Russell as the young attorney. Even with her hair tightly pulled back into an unflattering bun (to be literally and symbolically let down in quieter moments), Russell’s uncommon onscreen beauty proves a distraction.
