Jessica Lange plays an accomplished Chicago defense attorney, Ann Talbot, who must defend her own father (Armin Mueller-Stahl) in extradition proceedings when he’s accused of having committed war crimes in Hungary during World War II.

Slowly losing her conviction as to her father’s innocence, Lange’s character pulls out all the stops, including the political connections of her former father-in-law, to try to exonerate her dad.

Even the film’s accounts of Holocaust atrocities prove for the most part strangely unaffecting under Joe Eszterhas’ limp dialog and Constantin Costa-Gavras’ stodgy direction, which relies on a concussive score to try to create tension where there is none.

1989: Nomination: Best Actress (Jessica Lange)
