Set in the world of naval fighter pilots, pic has strong visuals and pretty young people in stylish clothes and a non-stop soundtrack.Cinematographer Jeffery Kimball and his team have assembled some exciting flight footage. Tom Cruise is Maverick, a hot-shot fighter pilot with a mind of his own and something to prove, assigned to the prestigious Top Gun training school. Along for the ride as a romantic interest is Kelly McGillis, a civilian astrophysicist brought in to teach the boys about negative Gs and inverted flight tanks. Cruise, however, has his sights set on other targets. McGillis is blessed with an intelligent and mature face that doesn’t blend that well with Cruise’s one-note grinning. There is nothing menacing or complex about his character. Tom Skerritt turns in his usual nice job as the hardened but not hard flight instructor. 1986: Best Song (‘Take My Breath Away’) Nominations: Best Editing, Sound, Sound Effects Editing
