Story of a nine-year-old girl who can enflame objects and people by power of her will balances human concern of a pursued and loving father and daughter (David Keith and Drew Barrymore) against a clandestine government agency that wants to use the girl’s power for nefarious ends. Agency is headed by Martin Sheen, with Moses Gunn and George C. Scott as chilly support group.
Film marks the first major picture for director Mark L. Lester. But pic’s stars are special effects team Mike Wood and Jeff Jarvis, whose pyrotechnics – flying fireballs, fire trenches, human balls of fire – create the film’s impact.
Script by Stanley Mann is quite faithful to the Stephen King novel, but cinematically that loyalty is damaging. Picture’s length can’t sustain the material.
