Pic is set in 1947, at a time of national rejoicing over a royal wedding and hardship caused by food rationing. Plot evolves out of a plan hatched by a group of town notables to fatten up a secret pig for festive devouring on the wedding night.
Central characters are a husband and wife team played by Maggie Smith and Michael Palin. She’s a bullying wife anxious to reach the social highspots in the Yorkshire village where he works as a foot doctor. Their domestic crises are made more complex and amusing by the presence of a greedy mother (Liz Smith) who lives in terror of being put away.
Director Malcolm Mowbray neatly orchestrates the resulting drama, and points up the class antagonisms at play.
