The visual splendors of North Carolina deserve top billing in A Breed Apart. The tale of romance and chicanery in the backwoods simply lacks reason, dramatic tension or emotional involvement.
The core of the story centers on an obsessive bird egg collector’s passion to secure specimens of a newly discovered breed of bald eagle. As the bird is protected by law, he has to hire a noted climber (Powers Boothe) to illegally pilfer the shells. However, apart from the physical danger of reaching their lofty peak, he must contend with their protector, a reclusive mystery man (Rutger Hauer) who inhabits a secluded island.
Also figuring into the story is the unstated emotional bond between Hauer and the storekeeper, played by Kathleen Turner, and her son who worships his independent ways.
