As the title proclaims, 2010 begins nine years after something went wrong with the Jupiter voyage of Discovery. On earth, politicians have brought the US and Russia to the brink of war, but their scientists have united in a venture to return to Jupiter to seek an answer to Discovery’s fate and the significance of the huge black monolith that orbits near it.
American crew is headed by Roy Scheider, John Lithgow and Bob Balaban. The Soviets want them along mainly for their understanding of HAL 9000, whose mutiny remains unexplained. If revived in the salvage effort, can HAL still be trusted?
In Peter Hyams’ hands [working from a novel by Arthur C. Clarke], the HAL mystery is the most satisfying substance of the film and handled the best. Unfortunately, it lies amid a hodge-podge of bits and pieces.
