Fun with Dick and Jane is a great comedy idea [from a story by Gerald Gaiser] largely shot down by various bits of tastelessness, crudity and nastiness. Stars George Segal and Jane Fonda are an upper middle-class family which turns to armed robbery when hubby loses his aerospace job.

Fonda and Segal have all the basic comedy essentials necessary to fulfill the minimum demands of the story, and that seems to be the problem: they seem to have gotten no help from direction and/or writing in getting off the ground.

Ed McMahon is terrific as Segal’s employer whose boozy bonhomie conceals the heart of a true Watergater. Making this essentially shallow and hypocritical character into a fascinating figure of corporate logrolling was a major challenge.
