Review: ‘Don’t Lose Your Head’

Don't Lose Your Head is a wild parody of Scarlet Pimpernel adventures in the Carry On mould. The film is a crazy debauch of duelling, doublecrossing and disaster. The troupers jump through their well-known hoops with agility.

Sidney James and Jim Dale are the two bored English aristocrats who baffle Robespierre and his chief of police (Citizen Camembert – the Big Cheese) with their audacity. James, posing as ‘The Black Fingernail’, turns up in a variety of disguises, none of which attempts to hide his homely features. He and Dale team up in sharp fashion. Kenneth Williams plays the police chief in his usual shrill style, and Peter Butterworth, Joan Sims and Charles Hawtrey valiantly cope with the passing nonsense in their usual capable manner.
