The Benny Goodman Story is of the same stripe as Universal's previously socko bandleader saga, The Glenn Miller Story. Both have bespectacled bandleaders with titles, both are Aaron Rosenberg productions.

If the romantics of the script and Steve Allen and Donna Reed’s interpretations lack a bit, they are sufficiently glossed over because the major canvas is the saga of the Chicago youth with the licorice stick and his dedication to the cause of a new exciting tempo, later interpreted as ‘swing’.

The unfolding is uncompromising on several fronts. The closeups on the very poor Jewish family and Goodman’s humble environments are not glossed over. In the same idiom there is no fanfare about the interracial mixing, socially or professionally.
